The University of Montana's Legacy of Forestry and Conservation
The W.A. Franke College of Forestry and Conservation (FCFC) was established at the University of Montana by a generous gift by the William A. and Carolyn Franke family in 2016. This expansion of the prestigious School of Forestry (founded in 1913) has facilitated undergraduate degrees in Environmental Science and Sustainability, Forestry, Wildlife Biology, and Parks, Tourism and Recreation, as well as a range of related Masters and Doctoral degree programs.
FCFC houses an impressive array of faculty research labs, centers, institutes and programs, as well as the Montana Forest and Conservation Experiment Station (MFCES) - a statewide agency research unit founded in 1937 that focuses on environmental issues of concern to Montanans (e.g., water availability and forest management). MFCES-facilitated research and teaching takes place at Lubrecht Experimental Forest (a 28,000-acre outdoor classroom and research laboratory in the Blackfoot River drainage) and Bandy Ranch (a 3,436-acre working cattle ranch). FCFC also conducts research and other activities at the Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Ranch through a partnership with the Boone & Crockett Club.
